THE INSTITUTE OF WOMEN TODAY

History of IWT

The Institute of Women Today (IWT) was founded in 1974 by Sister Margaret Ellen Traxler, SSND, and an interfaith group of women to provide an intelligent and articulate voice on issues affecting women and to provide training for female inmates. From that initial focus evolved a concern for the well being of all women. In the last 30 years, our role has expanded to serving homeless women and their children and senior citizens.

Today, IWT supports and operates Maria Shelter, a 50-bed transitional residence, and the Vincennes Senior Center, both located in the Englewood community on Chicago's south side. IWT is an integral part of this community.

IWT is an active member in Chicago's Partnership to End Homelessness, a collaboration of homeless service providers initiated in 1999. In concert with the Chicago Continuum of Care, PTEH has developed a Strategic Plan, endorsed by the Mayor, to end homelessness in Chicago by 2013. IWT subscribes to the plan's goal: "Housing First."
